// The Mechanics of Your Door
Diagnosing Power Window Failures
When you press the switch to roll your window up or down, you are engaging a delicate mechanical system inside your car door.
The window motor provides the electric power, while the window regulator is the physical scissor-lift or cable-and-pulley mechanism that actually holds the glass and moves it along the tracks.
In Houston’s extreme climate, the intense heat inside a parked car can cause the plastic clips and pulleys on these regulators to become brittle and eventually snap off. Dust and dirt can gunk up the tracks, putting immense strain on the electric motor until it burns out.
At A Plus Auto Glass, we don’t just replace auto glass; our technicians are deeply experienced in the mechanical components of vehicle doors. We perform precise diagnostics to determine exactly what has failed saving you from paying a dealership to blindly replace the entire expensive assembly when you might only need a simple new switch or a re-greased track.

Warning Signs It’s Time for a Repair
Don’t wait until the window falls into the door during a Houston rainstorm. Look out for these common warning signs:
The Drop
Your window suddenly falls down into the door frame and refuses to come back up. This is a classic sign of a snapped regulator cable or a broken plastic guide clip.
Grinding or Clicking Noises
When you press the button, you hear a terrible grinding or rapid clicking, but the glass doesn’t move. The motor is working, but the mechanical regulator has failed.
Sluggish Movement
The window rolls up extremely slowly, or you have to “help” it up with your hand. The motor is likely burning out or the tracks severely lack lubrication.
Crooked Glass
The window tilts forward or backward as it rolls down. It has slipped off its track or a specific guide clip has broken.
No Response at All
You press the button and hear absolutely nothing. This could be a dead motor, a blown fuse, or a faulty window switch on your door panel.

Frequently Asked Questions About Regulators
Can you just tape the window up for me?
We do not recommend taping a window, as the tape will rarely hold the heavy glass over bumps, and it often rips the paint off your door frame. If we have to order a specific regulator for your car, we will securely wedge the glass into the “up” position from the inside of the door panel so you can drive safely until the part arrives.
Do I have to replace both the motor and the regulator?
Not always. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, the motor and regulator may be two separate parts. If only the regulator cable broke, but the motor is fine, we will only replace the regulator. However, on some modern vehicles, they are manufactured as one single, inseparable assembly.
How long does a regulator repair take?
Most power window repairs take between 45 to 90 minutes. It involves carefully removing the interior door panel, extracting the broken assembly out of a tight space, installing the new one, and testing the alignment.
